Brits fork out 1.7 billion

More than a quarter (24 per cent) of British couples who married in last two years did so on foreign shores, forking out a total of £1.7billion* for the privilege, according to new research from Direct Line Home Insurance. The research reveals a 15 per cent rise in overseas weddings in the last ten years, with a quarter (26 per cent) of those couples planning marriage in the next two years intending to do so abroad. This compares with the one in ten (nine per cent) who headed off to foreign shores to get hitched between 1996 and 2001.  However, for some these happy occasions have a downside. More than 43,000 (2 per cent)** arrived back from their overseas wedding to discover that they had been burgled.

And as one in six (15 per cent) received their wedding gifts, worth an average of £1739, prior to jetting off, many lost their gifts without having the chance to enjoy them. The desire to escape irritating relatives was one of the main reasons for marrying abroad, with more than a quarter (27 per cent) saying this is why they fled our shores. Other motivations include guaranteed good weather (33 per cent) and the desire to roll wedding and honeymoon into one (39 per cent). It also appears that foreign weddings are no longer the intimate affairs that they once were – more than two million people (six per cent) have recently been invited to an overseas wedding.
