A bargain at the tip

(12 May2006) Over 9.5million homeowners hunt for used goods at car boot sales and charity shops while 740,000 go to the rubbish tip or skips for bargains One in every seven objects in the average UK home is now second-hand – from a car boot sale, charity shop, internet auction, rubbish tip, antique shop or a hand-me-down - reveals a new survey by home insurer, esure *. And the phenomenon of filling homes with second-hand items is benefiting from a change in the way these items are viewed. Nowadays, just 14% of people confess they would feel ‘very’ embarrassed and 7% would feel ‘slightly’ embarrassed to tell friends they bought an item ‘second-hand’. For the vast majority there is no longer a stigma attached to buying items previously owned by others.

However, there is a North/South divide when it comes to embarrassment - people in the North of England and Scotland (30% and 28% respectively) would be the most red-faced when admitting buying second-hand goods and twice as likely to feel the blush than people in the South East (13%). Despite this, homeowners in the North of England and Scotland have seen the biggest increase in the number of second-hand items in their home over the last five years – 24% compared to just 15% in the South East. The top three most recycled items in the home are bric-a-brac, such as small ornaments, followed by glassware and crockery, then furniture. At the opposite end of the spectrum, electrical items and white goods are the items most likely to be purchased brand new. Friends and family are the biggest source for cast-offs – 15.36 million homeowners acquired second hand items from colleagues, friends or family and 10.6 million as heirlooms or hand-me-downs **.
