Britain's dog owners spend more than £800 million on vet’s fees each year.

Almost a quarter of dog owners struggle to pay vet’s fees. They face an average bill of £154 a year for treatment to their best friends.

These fees have forced dog owners to take drastic action leaving seven per cent with no option but to put down their sick dog according to new research from Direct Line.


Unroadworthy Cars
Emma Holyer, Direct Line’s Breakdown spokesperson, said:. Furthermore there is still significant confusion amongst all motorists with over half (53 per cent) saying they were unaware that driving with a broken or missing wing mirror is illegal and four in 10 (41 per cent) said that they didn’t realise driving a car with defective steering is against the law because of the danger this represents to other motorists. Twenty two per cent of dog owners said that they would consider this drastic step if faced with treatment that they couldn't afford.

Many owners are risking their long-term financial security to avoid putting their dog down. One in 10 have put off paying bills, while 6% have got into difficulties by borrowing money. Fifteen per cent have raided their life savings in order to fund essential treatment for their dog.




Dog owners also frequently sacrifice luxuries to meet the escalating cost of treatment. A fifth have forgone purchases including clothes and DVDs, and 5% have cancelled or decided not to book holidays.

"Dog owners make great financial sacrifices to protect the health of their pets. As vets rarely display prices, many dog owners don't know the full cost of treatment until after it has been carried out, which can cause real problems, particularly for more than 85 %of pet owners who are not insured,” said Chris Price, head of DirectLine pet insurance.

Vets’ bills may increase further if a controversial new EU directive is approved. The legislation could mean that vets will have to record the date, product, quantity, manufacturer's batch number, expiry date and client details of all drugs that they dispense. This will result in more paperwork, which could lead to an increase in prices, according to Direct Line.


One In Seven Cars Vandalised
In particular, research reveals motorists are becoming scared to park their vehicle in certain cities with 8 out of ten motorists (79 per cent) worrying about where they leave their car. The fear of vandalism is causing one in 10 (13 per cent) drivers to boycott destinations they think are high risk, while one in five (19 per cent) refuse to buy a prestige motor because they feel it’s likely to be targeted by vandals. - Not worth the hassle (60 per cent). - Antennas bent/ damaged (26 per cent). Almost a fifth of victims of petty theft questioned (18 per cent) found themselves unable to relax and enjoy themselves and close to a quarter (22 per cent) said they felt vulnerable afterwards.
